About “The Gentle Art”

Two Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners practicing in a gym, with the female in a blue gi on the mat and the male in a white gi on top, both smiling.

BJJ is a martial art that teaches technique, leverage and timing, proving calm thinking beats strength every time.

Using weight distribution and balance, smaller people can safely control bigger ones.

More than a sport

BJJ gives kids a way to channel energy, find focus and feel proud of what they can do.

It’s confidence without ego, movement with meaning and fun with purpose.

“They were playing lots of football, but a new outlet to burn energy was needed.”

— Parent of Brodie (age 6)

Structure matters

Students earn belts and progress ‘stripes’. Simple milestones that reward consistency and effort.

That structure creates a rhythm young people love: learning new moves, earning recognition and setting their next goal.

“After class he walks out with a spring in his step — confident and proud.”

— Parent of Archie (age 8)

Beyond the mat

The impact goes far beyond the mat.

Parents notice calmer kids, clearer focus and confidence that follows them into school, friendships, and home life.

BJJ helps students feel more in control—of their body, their feelings and how they respond to obstacles.

  • None! Our classes are designed for complete beginners.

Each student learns at their own pace, with plenty of support and encouragement from coaches and teammates.

  • Comfortable, flexible clothing works great.

For the first class, a T-shirt and leggings or shorts are perfect.

Since classes are gi-based, bring a gi if you have one. We’ll guide you on getting one later if not.

Flip-flops are also encouraged for hygiene purposes when you’re not on the mats. Training is barefoot on clean mats.

  • Safety is always our top priority. However, all sports carry some risk of injury.

Our structured, closely supervised classes minimise that risk, with techniques taught step-by-step and an emphasis on control, spatial awareness and respect for training partners.

  • Yes — parents are welcome!

Watching can help children feel comfortable. Plus, it lets families see the progress happening on the mats each week.

  • All Method BJJ belt gradings are led by Professor Steven, Playfair’s head coach and black belt, to ensure consistency across the Method association.

Full belt gradings take place once a year at the Galleon.

Stripes are awarded throughout the year by your coaches to recognise steady progress, technical growth and commitment between formal gradings.
